Tuesday, July 10th 2012 09:00

Avon and Somerset police along with Wiltshire and Swindon are the only 2 places in the country where the speed cameras have been switched off.

In the rest of the UK the number of cameras has gone up in the last 2 years.

That's according to stats out today which did find the number of cameras that actually takes pictures has gone down.

"There are clearly still accidents that are still speed related. It's very difficult at this stage to judge what impact the removal of the cameras has made." Philip Gomm from the RAC Foundation told us.

"We need to look at the data very carefully and work out whether turning off the cameras is something that's good for road safety or bad."

"Our research a couple of years ago suggested if all the cameras across the UK had been turned off another 80 people across the country would die each year. We'd like to think that Avon and Somerset police along with Wiltshire and Swindon continue to look at the data very closely."
