Land where seven football pitches are based in Melksham should always stay as playing fields after an agreement was signed this week.

The Melksham Without Parish Council has now taken over the Bowerhill Playing Fields after Wiltshire Council agreed they're better placed to look after them.

This means football teams like Melksham United will always be able to use the pitches as part of the 'Fields In Trust' scheme to protect playing fields across the country.

Stuart Wheeler, cabinet member for amenities and leisure said: "These fields are well used and will benefit from local stewardship. People living in Melksham have the inside knowledge on what works best for Melksham and we hope this transfer will mean the community can continue to enjoy this green amenity at its best."

Mike Mills, chair of MWPC said: "This land is already well used by both local football teams and residents for informal leisure and recreation. We know we can build on this as we have exciting plans for its future to continue to make this an amenity which all can enjoy."
